Our Mission

Safe Passage for Children of Minnesota Is a citizens’ group that advocates for improvements in Minnesota’s child welfare system.

Our Mission

To ensure that Minnesota has a child welfare system in which children are safe and reach their full potential.

Our Vision

There will always be a group of Minnesota citizens who advocate on behalf of victims of child maltreatment and hold counties and the state accountable for good outcomes for these children and their families.

Our Goal

A Minnesota child protection and foster care system in that continuously improves the lives of children, as demonstrated by objective, measurable outcomes. If the system is working well, children’s outcomes will improve over time.

Anti-Racism Statement

Our mission is to ensure that Minnesota has a child welfare system in which children are safe and reach their full potential. However, children and families of color are more disproportionately impacted by the child welfare system and congruent systems and factors. With the needs of children firmly at the core of our mission,we are determined to bring awareness of disparities due to race and culture, eliminate systemic racism in the child welfare system, and improve outcomes for children of color.

Our focus is on these core components:

  • To create, support, and build support for legislation that works to eliminate racial disparities
  • To bring leading practices in alleviating racial disparities to appropriate stakeholders in the Minnesota child welfare system
  • To be a conduit to listen, promote, and advocate the point of view of all racial and ethnic groups to ensure meaningful representation in policy making and practice implementation

We are part of a large network of well-meaning child welfare advocates which need to learn from a new reality of social justice. Minnesota has the capability and expertise to root out current racially biased decision-making and actions in child welfare programs, and we are  committed to making that happen. It will take all of us to accomplish this critically important goal to keep all of Minnesota’s children safe.

“Child welfare” refers to public child protection and foster care programs and related services.
