This week Safe Passage for Children held its annual Day on the Hill, when volunteers visit their state Representatives and Senators to advocate for victims of child maltreatment. 32 advocates visited 40 elected officials, with another 5–10 visits scheduled for later in the legislative session.
The volunteers discussed our three legislative priorities for the year, all intended to address unfinished business from the Governor’s 2015 Child Protection Task Force.
Thanks to our volunteers, this is our most effective advocacy event of the year. They share our legislative agenda at a bullet-point level, but spend much of their time telling legislators why they care about these issues. Their testimony demonstrates that citizens expect legislators to carry out the planned reforms, and that the people advocating for change are not going away.
