This week, the Star Tribune published our letter to the editor responding to its reporting on child maltreatment deaths in the Red Lake Nation. The paper’s series reported that federal officials say the tribe’s child welfare program for years returned children to unsafe situations.
Those deaths are heartbreaking. But we wrote in because we’re worried Minnesotans will read this as a problem that belongs to one community. It doesn’t. Children are dying from abuse and neglect in every corner of our state.
Every child in Minnesota deserves the same protection, whether a county or a tribal nation handles their case. That’s the standard we’ll keep pushing for.
