Locked in adjacent rooms, siblings Donny and Martha didn’t see each other for seven years.  They escaped to the runaway house where I worked.

Locked in adjacent rooms, siblings Donny and Martha didn’t see each other for seven years.  They escaped to the runaway house where I worked.  We gave them all the support we could, but too much damage was done.  They joined a religious cult and vanished.

Current myth says all children want to be with their biological parents and will eventually find their way home no matter what the system does.  Donny and Martha are just one example of why this is not true.

This myth serves too many adult agendas — including cash-strapped budget managers, those who fear the ‘nanny state’, or are wary of having child protection in their community.

Most professionals perpetuating this idea do prioritize child safety.  But their message makes it seem otherwise, and should be revised.
