Our recent webinars with Andrew Campbell and Victor Vieth introduced us to the concept of family violence — the intersection of child, animal, and domestic partner abuse. It is new to us, but not to others. For one, the National Link Coalition has provided resources and research on family violence for 35 years.
This study for example documents a 60% overlap among these forms of abuse. The authors reference other papers describing many aspects of this phenomenon, such as how abusers use threats and actual harm to animals to keep children and domestic partners from leaving or reporting abuse.
This new information is inspiring us to reach out to advocates in these related fields and explore how we might work together to identify family violence sooner, and offer help more effectively.
