History and Future of Family Assessment

History and Future of Family Assessment 779 653 Safe Passage for Children of Minnesota

In our upcoming June 10th web conference national experts will discuss the past and future of Family Assessment (FA).

Family Assessment has roots in research and policy discussions starting in the 1980’s. It encouraged focusing on parents’ strengths rather than their deficits.  Social workers helped parents to reduce risk factors such as social isolation and unemployment, and increase “protective factors” like strong social networks and stable housing.

But critics say some FA practices endanger children, for example giving parents advance notice of a child protection visit, failing to do rigorous fact- finding, and not recording case information for future reference.

Please register here to join us and explore the initial promise of Family Assessment, controversial practices that emerged, and ways to retain its positive features without undue risks to children.
