Nicholas Kristoff (@NickKristof) deserves our readership. He recently published an update to his December article on websites that feature torture and sexual assaults of children.

His expose produced mixed results. Some credit card companies stopped working with the websites, and the Canadian government cracked down on Montreal-based PornHub, which removed nine million videos. However this mainly drove their business to its Czech rival XVideos.

Half of traffic from these sites comes from Google, which does have the capacity to screen searches. Queries such as “how to commit suicide” return helpline information and “how to kill my husband” produce literary humor.  But terms like “rape unconscious girl” pass unimpeded.

Kristof suggests several practical measures to reduce this violence including legislation that would allow victims of nonconsensual videos to sue.

Please read the most recent column and suggest ways we might impact this scourge.

Listen to this week’s podcast which explores Nicholas Kristof’s latest report in more detail.
