Rep. Jim Nash shares his story with KARE 11

Rep. Jim Nash shares his story with KARE 11 748 421 Safe Passage for Children of Minnesota

Last week, Minnesota Representative Jim Nash shared his story of childhood abuse in a moving interview with KARE 11. He spoke openly about the trauma he endured and how it fuels his mission to strengthen child protection laws, including:

  • Mandated Reporter Training (HF 1346): Requires that at least half of mandated-reporter training focus on recognizing signs of abuse and neglect, with expert input from child-safety professionals.

  • Preventing Interference with Reports (HF 4793): Makes it a misdemeanor for anyone—or any organization—to discourage or prevent someone from reporting suspected child maltreatment.

These reforms help ensure that teachers, coaches, doctors, and others who work with children know what to look for and feel supported when they report concerns.

Rep. Nash’s story embodies what Safe Passage stands for—changing the system to create hope for vulnerable children. His courage highlights the urgent need for accountability and reforms to better protect Minnesota’s youngest.

We look forward to continuing to work with him during the next legislative session to achieve lasting, systemic change.
