This second installment of a New York Times report shows that tech companies are identifying images of sexual assaults against children more effectively, but won’t use their technical tools to stop their dissemination.
As examples, the videoconferencing service Zoom has livestreamed child rapes, Amazon and Apple don’t scan uploaded imagery for child sexual assaults, Microsoft’s Bing search engine actually suggests search terms to pedophiles, and Facebook plans to encrypt Messenger, which will make these crimes undetectable.
Can we fight this? Or have these corporate giants become virtual sovereign states, immune to outside influence? Would they ignore any regulation? Would consumers be willing to boycott Facebook or Snapchat even for a day?
