Stand up for the Media

Recent accusations of media bias compel us to point out the contributions our local outlets have made to reforming Minnesota’s child welfare programs.

The Star Tribune’s 2015 investigative reporting series on child protection elevated flaws in this system to the top of the public policy agenda. Continuing scrutiny particularly from KSTP Channel 5 but also KARE 11 and other television stations has helped keep these concerns from falling off the radar.

We have watched reporters covering these issues pursue the facts diligently and follow them wherever they led. They didn’t start with a preferred conclusion and present only information that supported it.

Journalists can normally take care of themselves. But now is a good time to remember why we need them, and to publicly defend their integrity.
