The Case for Getting Children Back in School

The Case for Getting Children Back in School 2560 1707 Safe Passage for Children of Minnesota

This American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) bulletin encourages school districts to take every necessary COVID-related precaution, then get children back to school as soon as possible.

All children are losing opportunities to develop social and emotional skills.  In addition: unequal access to technologies is making racial disparities worse, many children are missing school meals, and approximately 50% of maltreated children nationally aren’t being reported to child protection, largely because teachers aren’t seeing them.

The AAP describes how schools have reopened responsibly by successfully controlling community spread of the coronavirus.  Safe partial reopening options include alternating in-person school days with remote learning, and implementing learning pods which provide socially-distanced, clean locations for small group tutoring.

Officials weighing when to reopen schools should factor in a sense of urgency about getting children back into settings where they will be seen and fed.

This week Safe Passage held our annual fundraiser.
