What’s Coming in 2018

What’s Coming in 2018 2560 1708 Safe Passage for Children of Minnesota

Here are some major child welfare developments we anticipate for Minnesota in 2018.

We should see progress on statewide reforms. The state’s largest jurisdiction, Hennepin County, is on course to improve its program significantly. The Department of Human Services appears more inclined to embrace reforms and exert a stronger leadership role. And many more children are receiving child protection and foster care services thanks to recent program improvements.

So far however neither legislators nor Governor Mark Dayton support more funding for caseworkers, foster parents, or support services. And, a projected $118 million deficit makes it harder to advocate for resources.

This year’s wild card is a proposed class action lawsuit, which might force the state to add money to the system.

Upcoming e-briefs will have more on these topics.
