April Is Child Abuse Prevention Month—Take Action 612 408 Safe Passage for Children of Minnesota

Can you stand up for Minnesota kids on April 14?

That’s our Day at the Capitol, when we’ll meet with legislators, share why prevention matters and advocate for policies that protect children before harm occurs.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month — a time to recognize that every child deserves to grow up safe, supported and surrounded by caring adults. It’s also a time to confront the reality that abuse and neglect remain urgent challenges in our communities.

In Minnesota, the need for prevention is clear: State agencies received over 75,000 reports of suspected child maltreatment in 2023, reflecting the sheer volume of concerns about children’s safety across the state. Behind each report is a child and a family that may need support, services or intervention.

The consequences of maltreatment can be devastating. In Minnesota, at least 32 children were confirmed to have died from abuse or neglect in 2023, marking the fifth consecutive year of increases.

These tragedies are not inevitable — they are preventable. Research consistently shows that many families involved in child protection systems are facing challenges like substance use, mental health struggles or economic stress, underscoring the importance of early support and community-based prevention efforts.

That’s why your voice matters. Register by March 31 if you’d like us to schedule meetings with your legislators on your behalf.

Help ensure that child abuse prevention remains a priority in Minnesota — and that every child matters. Join us.
