Safe Passage for Children of Minnesota and Never Shake Minnesota are working together to raise awareness about child abuse and maltreatment across our state. These are not easy conversations, but awareness, education, and action save lives.
Throughout the month, we’ll be speaking with the media, airing radio messages, and engaging with legislators. On April 4, the I-35W bridge will be lit blue—a visible reminder of the children who depend on us to notice and act on their behalf.
The reality in Minnesota
Each year, at least 5,000 Minnesota children are confirmed victims of abuse or neglect—enough to stretch more than two miles if they stood in a single line. Most abuse happens in a child’s own home, often at the hands of a caregiver.
Young children are especially vulnerable. Those under age 3 face the highest risk of serious injury or death. They are more likely to suffer abusive head trauma (often called shaken baby syndrome) or accidental drug ingestion.
About 80% of reports to child protection come from mandated reporters—professionals required by law to report suspected abuse. But anyone can make a report. Because abuse happens behind closed doors, children rely on the adults around them to recognize the signs—and to act.
We’ve compiled resources for struggling parents, concerned community members, and mandated reporters. You can find them here: https://
It’s not too late to register for our Day at the Capitol on April 14—we hope you’ll join us.
