Some of our volunteers have encouraged us to help them form support groups for adult survivors of child abuse and neglect.
We have reviewed existing models and believe the best option is to adapt an approach developed by the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) so it will work for the particular needs of maltreatment survivors.
Participants in SNAP groups report that sharing their stories with others who have similar experiences fills a gap not reached by therapy, particularly to get closure on difficult issues. These groups are largely self-managed, so Safe Passage may have the necessary resources to help develop them, especially if we get help from foundations.
If you have thoughts about this endeavor whether as a potential participant or as someone who has experience with support groups, please send them to us confidentially at contactus@safepassagemn.org.
